Biography Of
Lawrence W. Wuensch, CEcD

Changes in the Aviation Industry Since September 11

Since the deregulation of the airlines during the Reagan Administration, smaller airports have been at a disadvantage when dealing with the carriers.  Trends such as “fortress hubs” and consolidation have focused service in the largest airports and concepts of convenience and customer service have given way to efficiency.  On 9/11, many carriers used the temporary closing of the New York and Washington airports to trim their routes even more.  Melbourne lost two of its three carriers as a result.  Mr. Wuensch will discuss the efforts to attract additional carriers to Melbourne and the current state of the airline industry that impacts this effort.

About the Speaker:

Lawrence Wuensch is the Director of Land Development for the Melbourne International Airport in Florida, and has worked there for over 12 years.

He has had a wide variety of experience in both government and economic development.  After graduation from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) in 1970, he became a city planner, working for the Cities of Richmond and Portsmouth, Virginia and the New River Valley Planning District Commission.  He then spent 12 years as the County Administrator of two Virginia county governments: Giles County and Halifax County.  As a County Administrator he was responsible for a wide range of local government management responsibilities.

Switching to the field of economic development, he spent 5 years as Executive Director of the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation in Virginia and then 3 ˝ years as President of the Brevard Economic Development Corporation.

After founding a small telecommunications business in Brevard County from 1992 to 1994, he joined the Melbourne International Airport staff in October of 1994.  His major duties have included all aspects of airport development and marketing.  He is currently responsible for development and leasing of airport land and facilities, including the very successful high technology industrial park.

He is a graduate of the Economic Development Institute at the University of Oklahoma, and holds the advanced professional designation of Certified Economic Developer (CEcD),  awarded by the International Economic Development Council.
